  17. ------------
  18. Almanac is not free software.  It is released as
  19. shareware, which provides the opportunity for the
  20. program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  21.  
  22. We hope that after you try Almanac you will like
  23. it so much that you will want to register.  By
  24. doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  25. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  26. shareware.

  29. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.

  32. LEGAL MATTERS
  33. -------------
  34. We are not responsible for anything at all.  Nothing.
  35. Even if we are held responsible, the limit of our
  36. liability is the licensing fees you paid.  The full text
  37. of our license agreement is found near the bottom of
  38. this file.

  41. COMPATIBILITY
  42. -------------
  43. If you are running a version of Almanac earlier than
  44. 3.0, please be advised that the format of the desktop
  45. data files has been changed.  Notes and appointments
  46. entered in Almanac 1.0 through 1.04 (*.ALD files)
  47. will require translation to the new data base format.
  48. Refer to the XLATEALD.TXT file for instructions on
  49. how to convert these data files using XLATEALD.EXE.
  50.  
  51. Overlays created with earlier versions of Almanac
  52. (*.ALO files) are 100% compatible with Almanac 3.0.
  53. The wedding anniversary gifts are now optional.
  54. You may edit any wedding anniversary definitions
  55. created with pre-3.0 versions and and check the
  56. Wedding check box to display this information.

  60. UPDATING A PREVIOUS ALMANAC INSTALLATION
  61. ----------------------------------------
  62. If you are updating a 3.0 Almanac installation, you may
  63. want to de-select one or more of the installation
  64. options.  The following table explains what files will
  65. be copied to your hard disk for each option:
  66.  
  67.     Program Files:  Copies the executable program file
  68.                     and supporting modules.  This option
  69.                     should be selected when installing
  70.                     or upgrading your Almanac program.
  71.  
  72.  Default Calendar:  Copies the DEFAULT.ALC calendar file
  73.                     used by Almanac on start-up.  Also
  74.                     copies the ALMLOCN.DAT file that
  75.                     contains location and time zone
  76.                     information for various cities.
  77.  
  78.   Sample Overlays:  Copies the sample overlays files
  79.                     included with the Almanac release.
  80.  
  81. Online Help Files:  Copies online help files that can be
  82.                     accessed from Almanac's Help menu.

  86. INSTALLING ALMANAC 3.0
  87. ----------------------
  88. The Almanac package includes a graphical Windows
  89. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  90. You should place all of the files included in the release
  91. package on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of
  92. your hard drive.
  93.  
  94. SETUP requires about 600K bytes to complete the
  95. installation of Almanac.  Once installed, the Almanac
  96. files will occupy approximately 400K.
  97.  
  98. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  99. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager.
  100.  
  101. Enter "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  102. drive/directory that you are installing Almanac FROM
  103. (for example, A:\SETUP).
  104.  
  105. 1. The first action performed by SETUP is to display the
  106.    date your computer is set to.  Almanac's calendar
  107.    will not operate correctly if your computer is not set
  108.    to the correct date.
  109.  
  110. 2. SETUP will prompt for the target directory you would like
  111.    to install Almanac to on your hard disk.  Accept the
  112.    default or enter a directory of your choice.
  113.  
  114. 3. SETUP will then display a dialog of the components that
  115.    can be installed.  You should leave all of the boxes
  116.    checked if this is a first time installation.
  117.  
  118. 4. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  119.    SETUP will allow a Program Manager group to be selected
  120.    to receive the startup icon for Almanac.
  121.  
  122. SETUP will inform you when installation is complete, and
  123. direct you to the WHATSNEW.TXT and REGISTER.TXT files.
  124.  
  125. IF SETUP REPORTS PROBLEMS UPDATING COMMDLG:
  126.  
  127.   1) Exit Windows and restart Windows to insure a clean
  128.      system.
  129.  
  130.   2) Hold down the SHIFT key while Windows is initial-
  131.      izing.  This will prevent Windows from launching
  132.      any other applications after Program Manager.
  133.  
  134.   3) Do NOT use the Browse function to start SETUP.
  135.      Doing so will invoke the COMMDLG module and
  136.      prevent SETUP from completing the installation.

  147.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  148.  
  149.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Almanac
  150.  on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining 
  151.  whether Almanac is suitable for their needs.  The use 
  152.  of Almanac, except for the initial 30-day trial, 
  153.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Almanac,
  154.  outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person, 
  155.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is 
  156.  strictly prohibited. 
  157.  
  158.  A single user license permits a user to use Almanac
  159.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  160.  program on different computers, but may not use the program
  161.  on more than one computer at the same time.
  162.  
  163.  No one may modify or patch the Almanac executable files 
  164.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling, 
  165.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program. 
  166.  
  167.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Almanac 
  168.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above 
  169.  limitations, and also the following: 
  170.  
  171.   1)    Almanac and all of its release files must be copied
  172.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  173.         this license information.
  174.  
  175.   2)    Almanac may not be distributed in conjunction with
  176.         any other product without a specific license to do so
  177.         from Impact Software.
  178.  
  179.   3)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  180.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  181.  
  182.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  183.            may make Almanac available for downloading only as
  184.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  185.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  186.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  187.            charge for the download of Almanac.
  188.  
  189.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  190.            the ASP may distribute Almanac, subject to the
  191.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  192.            approved vendors may distribute Almanac only after
  193.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  194.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  195.            details (enclose your catalog).
  196.  
  197.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the 
  198.            Almanac diskette to their members, subject to 
  199.            the above conditions, without specific permission.  
  200.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee 
  201.            not to exceed five dollars. 
  202.  
  203.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  204.  
  205.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  206.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  207.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  208.   purchase.
  209.  
  210.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  211.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  212.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  213.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  214.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  215.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  216.  
  217.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  218.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  219.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  220.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  221.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  222.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  223.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  224.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  225.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  226.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  227.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  228.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  229.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  230.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  232.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  233.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  234.   contents.

  236.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS

  238.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  239.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
